8.3 THE NAME NUMBER
8.3 THE NAME NUMBER
********************
In numerology, every name has a vibratory number, obtained by translating the letters of the name into figures, then adding their totals and reducing them to primary numbers, as already described. The name number, as an expression of a person’s developed personality and a key to ambition or achievement, should either blend with the birth number or be geared to it.
In short, natural inclinations or influences are important in the development of both an outward and dynamic personality, so that a name, as it gains fame or recognition, will express the full force and true character that it represents in the public mind.
There are many fascinating facts to this phase of numerology, with many promising prospects for individual attainment, provided the rules are recognized and followed. The first step, of course, is to find the number represented by the name.

Actually, this is merely a listing of the letters In numerical order: A, 1; B. 2; C, 3, and so on up to Z. 26, which becomes 8 when its figures are added. (2 + 6 = 8)
By reference to the chart, any name can be transcribed into figures, letter by letter. When added, the totals can be reduced to the primary number representing the name vibration.
As an example: The name George Washington
G E O R G E = 7+5+6+9+7+5 = 39
W A S H I N G T O N = 5 + 1 + 1 + 8 + 9 + 5 + 7 + 2 + 6 + 5 = 49
Total = 88
Reduced 8 + 8 = 16
Reduced l + 6 = 7
Name Number = 7
In the case of a famous personage like George Washington, the name itself creates a strong impression. Enough facts are known about him to analyze his life and career in terms of 7 as a name vibration. This will be covered in the discussion of the meaning of the numbers, which follows.
But with an unknown name, only the vibration registers. It impresses itself upon people who hear the person’s name, but if the person himself fails to come up to expectations, or his traits prove at variance with that vibratory message, the result is a disappointment or a total blank. That person, numerologically speaking, would do better with a name more suited either to his nature or to the impression which he is trying to convey to the world at large.
To the old question, “What’s in a name?” the long-experienced numerologist will reply, “Much, much more than you suppose.” He might even phrase his answer with the well-known quote: “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” For here, the accent would be on the name Horatio, which adds up as follows:
H O R A T I O = 8+6+9+1+2+9+6 = 41
Reduced: 4+1 = 5
And 5, as already mentioned, is the number of uncertain, adventure, even the incredible, just the thing to overwhelm anyone with a number 5 vibration, who would naturally be skeptical until flattened with evidence to the contrary.
This raises the question: Are first, or given names, significant in themselves, from the numerological standpoint? The answer is: Normally, no. They are of importance chiefly as a component of the entire name. A name number of 7, composed of 3 + 4, has shadings, so to speak, that differ from a name number of 7 that is composed of 1 and 6. These may be studied to a nicety; but they both add up to number 7.
But in the case of a name like Horatio, or any other character, real or imaginary, who is known by a single name or title, that one name can stand as the mark of the individual
The same applies to stage names, pen names, and the like. Often, these become the true vibrational expression of a personality that would otherwise be lost. Alterations, changes in a name; the use of an initial, or the act of dropping it, can have much to do with success or failure, so numerologists claim.
So, before delving deeply in such details, let us consider the meaning of the numbers 1 to 9, in regard to both the birth number and the name number, as given in the charts that follow.
