11.3.5. GROUP 4: THE MORAL SENTIMENTS
*************************************

These are found in the coronal region and are regarded as dominating faculties in high, fully rounds heads.

17. Conscientiousness: Developed, an ability to recognize right from wrong, with a high sense of integrity, coupled by adherence to convictions. Excessive development results in criticism of others, which can lead to self-condemnation. Deficiency shows a lack of principle and a self-justification of one’s own faults.

When first noticed, partly through its deficiency, conscientiousness was placed where firmness now stands and vice versa. Often, the two may be treated as one but the more modern treatment is to set conscientiousness more toward the sides, with firmness centralised.

18. Hope: Once regarded simply as the concomitant of other faculties, hope was eventually assigned to this area, forward of conscientiousness. Developed, it marks an optimistic nature, confident of eventual happiness. Excessive development is the sign of the constant dreamer, whose extravagant expectations never are fulfilled. Deficiency denotes the pessimist, given to deep gloom.
