12.1.3. THE SQUARE FACE
***********************
Width at the temple and width at the jawline are almost identical in the full-fledged square type; but some variance is allowable, provided the face is generally squarish. The heavier the jaw, the more rugged the individual is apt to be; but any face of a definitely square shape represents a person of an active mind and nature.
You will find scholars here along with businessmen, for the square type strikes an intermediate between the round and triangular. But their learning is more of a practical nature, not going to intellectual extremes, while in commercial pursuits they depend more on their own efforts than upon the management of someone else’s talents.
That does not mean that people of this type always work alone. On the contrary, they have great directive ability and are often natural leaders. But always, their own activity is an important factor. They prefer to show people how to do things and set the pace for whatever is done. As a result they frequently rise to high positions through their sheer dynamic power.
Will power, firmness of opinion, and a constant urge for action form a powerful combination in the makeup of the squarefaced type. Often they rely on physical strength or sheer drive to accomplish their aims. Mechanical skill is strongly present in the square type. They are prompt at taking up new things and carrying them through to a successful conclusion. The keener their minds, the more they feel that results are what mainly count.
Men of this type should plan ahead to make the most of their natural qualifications. They need mental stimulus toward the expansion of their efforts, otherwise they will favor brawn over brain. In our modern space age, where courage and physical prowess are so often needed as the concomitant of high intelligence, men of the square type are needed as pioneers as well as leaders. As technicians they are among the best, and the more ways they find to apply their ability the greater their chance of success.
Women of this type are also keyed to the modern tempo. With so many active fields to choose from, they are free from the restraints and limitations that cramped their style in bygone years. They should concentrate on whatever they undertake rather than relying too much on their versatility, with the ultimate aim of working up to a directive or executive capacity their chosen field. At the same time, they should not neglect interests that are to their liking, as their success frequently hinges upon the proper blend of capability and personality.
Children of this type should have great prospects, considering the present emphasis on physical fitness, as well as technical and scientific training, for their bent is toward those directions. More than ever, they should be taught the practical side of whatever they undertake, so as to put it to later use. If they like a sport, they should learn its fine points. If they show aptitude in a mechanical or scientific field they should be urged to continue it.
