1.27 THE DECANS & THEIR PLANETS

To give fuller interpretation to the signs of the zodiac, they have been divided into periods of approximately ten days, called the “decans” or “decantes” which cover modifications of individual traits. These are attributed to minor planetary influences, which temper or blend with the ruling influence of the period. A study of these is therefore helpful in forming the individual horoscope, but they are always to be regard as subordinate to the ruling planet.
The ten-day periods are somewhat arbitrary in order to allow for the five and sometimes six—extra days in the year beyond the 360 required for the thirty-six decans. These have been added according to accepted procedure, to form various six-day periods instead of five.
