These are found in the coronal region and are regarded as dominating faculties in high, fully rounds heads.

17. Conscientiousness: Developed, an ability to recognize right from wrong, with a high sense of integrity, coupled by adherence to convictions. Excessive development results in criticism of others, which can lead to self-condemnation. Deficiency shows a lack of principle and a self-justification of one’s own faults.

When first noticed, partly through its deficiency, conscientiousness was placed where firmness now stands and vice versa. Often, the two may be treated as one but the more modern treatment is to set conscientiousness more toward the sides, with firmness centralised.

18. Hope: Once regarded simply as the concomitant of other faculties, hope was eventually assigned to this area, forward of conscientiousness. Developed, it marks an optimistic nature, confident of eventual happiness. Excessive development is the sign of the constant dreamer, whose extravagant expectations never are fulfilled. Deficiency denotes the pessimist, given to deep gloom.

19. Spirituality: An extension of the previous region, now defined as a separate faculty. Developed, a devout, intuitive nature, often with some psychic overtones. Excessive development, a superstitious nature, sometimes fanatical. Deficiency is the mark of the complete skeptic.

20. Veneration: Akin to the last-named region. Developed, conformity to custom and tradition. Reverential, and highly admiring of greatness, with respect for old age. Excessive development, obsessed with lofty ideas, too inclined to hero-worship. Deficiency denotes a disrespectful, cynical type that belittles anything worthwhile.

21. Benevolence: When developed, a fine, humane, sympathetic disposition. Excessive development, over-sympathetic easily imposed upon. Deficiency denotes a calloused, selfish, unkind attitude, indifferent to the suffering of others.
